Yesterday I was listening to my playlist called drake wouldnāt treat me like this, which for some reason is the playlist I listen to when I really need to get work done. There was a moment when I was mumbling the lyrics to a song, word-for-word unconsciously, and I realized that I couldnāt even name the song off the top of my head. The song was āFurthest Thingā, from his 2013 studio album, Nothing Was The Same:
I can't help it, I can't help it
I was young and I was selfish
I made every woman feel like she was mine and no one else's Now you hate me, stop pretending Stop that fronting, I can't take it Girl don't treat me like a stranger Girl you know I seen ya naked
Itās funny to me how I can go months, years even, without listening to this song and still find the lyrics lodged back in the archives of my mind. How I feel like a kid who just witnessed a rabbit being pulled out of a hat when Drake rhymes ātake itā with ānaked.ā Dammit, Aubrey.
What about you? What's a song lyric that lives in your head rent free?
Since I started listening to Joanna Newsom I've had this weird beautiful cryptic line from Monkey and Bear come and go in my head:
"So, with the courage of a clown, or a cur, or a kite jerking tight at its tether
In her dun brown gown of fur and a jerkin of swan-spun leather
Bear would away on her hind legs, the organ would grind dregs of song for the pleasure
Of the children who'd shriek throwing coins at her feet then recoiling in terror"
It's just a gorgeous melody and the whole song is this odd Marxist parable about monkey and bear that escape the confinement of their farm to make a life of their own, except the monkey uses the bear to make money for their trip. I'm a goddamn sucker for fairy tales and class commentary so maybe that explains it
For me, that song is "Heart of the City" by Jay-Z.
"Every time I hit the floor I bounce up like round ball"
"Bird-ass *** I don't mean to ruffle y'all
I know you waiting in the wing but I'm doing my thing"
"i remember when your head caught flame
it kissed your scalp and caressed your brain
well you laughed baby it's okay
it's buzzcut season anyway"

"rest in peace to anna nicole smith, yes my dear you're so explosive" - bottoms up by trey songz, ft. nicki minaj

"picking up a penny with a press on is easier than holding you down"
āIt doesnāt feel quite right to call you a friend
When we take on new bodies I will scour the earth to find you againā
